Market Yourself

When you are looking for a job you need to be able to market yourself. That means that you need to be able to draw attention to your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. Most people think that this means selling yourself in the interview but there is a lot more to marketing yourself than that! Let’s take a look at some of the things you should consider in order to market yourself effectively.

First of all, you should know how you want to present yourself. If you go into the job search process without knowing yourself very well, you may end up being quite surprised. It is the same concept that marketers use when they say, “Know your product.” You would try to sell a computer to someone if you didn’t know that difference between a hard drive and a disposable drive would you? Of course not. Learn what your strengths are. Decide how to display them best.

The second thing you should know is that marketing yourself starts long before the interview. Does Kraft wait until you walk into the store before they begin to market their products? No. Chances are you are already somewhat familiar with their products before you enter a store. You have seen the commercials and you have heard about them from friends. You should do the same thing when you are marketing yourself for a job.

There are many ways that you can market yourself before you get that interview and one of the most effective ways to do this through online marketing methods. The fact is that in this day and age, employers are going to look you up online anyway, so start by giving them something good. There are many tools that you can use to market yourself online and you can even reach out to specific businesses.

Some of the online tools you might consider include:

  • A website or blog
  • YouTube
  • Forums
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • OnePage
  • About.me

Market yourself offline as well. There are many opportunities to market yourself in the real world environment. You may want to consider:

  • Industry events
  • Job fairs
  • Business cards
  • Professional organizations

Be reachable. Make it easy for people to find you by providing them with an email address and phone number.

What means have you used to market yourself?
