What Is Getting In the Way of Reaching Your Goals?

When you have goals you really need to be focused and you need to know what you need to do to reach those goals.  Some people never seem to reach their goals - career focused or otherwise - while others are on a path that just seems to propel them forward.

If you feel like you aren't reaching you goals this might be why:

  • You fear the unknown.  If you are afraid of things you aren't familiar with you might find yourself sabotaging your goals without even meaning to.  Some people are afraid of starting a new job so the unconsciously make mistakes on resumes and cover letters that they wouldn't make otherwise or they are late for interviews.  If you find your self doing (or not doing) things that are uncharacteristic of you, ask yourself what you are really afraid of and then find out everything you need to know to conquer that fear.
  • You feel like it is too late to start a new career.  You need to remember that people of all ages and walks of life start new careers.  It is never too late.  You can learn new skills, you can meet new people, and you can do it if you are determined.
  • You don't like to ask for help.  At some point everyone needs a hand whether it is in learning a new skill or meeting the right people.  Don't be afraid to ask for advice or a reference or an introduction.  These are the things we all must do at some point in our lives.
  • You are shy.  Shyness can be a big factor in reaching goals because in order to reach those goals that you have set for yourself you need to talk to other people.  Start putting yourself in situations where  you must combat your shyness.  Do it over and over again in bigger and bigger doses and you will get used to putting yourself out there.  As you learn that you are capable of holding a conversation, voicing your opinion, and sharing your knowledge you will feel more confident.
