I’ll bet you know someone young that is unemployed or has been unemployed in the last year. I’ll bet you know more than one. And when I’m talking about young people I’m talking about people 29 years of age and under. And the truth is that unemployment rates in this age group are higher than ever.
Why? I mean besides the fact there just doesn’t seem to be as many jobs.
One of the factors that comes into play is skills. Yes, they are learning skills in school but many of them aren’t learning the skills that they need to be productive employees. They need to learn essential skills that include:
- Reading (both reading text and reading for information and reading for understanding)
- Document Use
- Digital Technology
- Continuous Learning
- Working with Others
- And others
These are essential skills that are needed in almost any job yet young people are not developing these skills as they pertain to the workplace. They learn them just enough to get through school but they don’t learn them well enough to apply them to most jobs. As a result, young people are having a hard time keeping jobs once they get them.
Respect is something that anyone over 30 grew up with. They knew they had to respect people that were older than them, superiors, and rules. Many young people believe that it is their right to voice their opinion in any situation, that they can speak to anyone in disrespectful tones, and that they should have their technology at their finger tips. So, when they are told that they have to turn off cell phones or that they are not allowed to speak whatever comes to their mind, they fight against it.
Younger generations have encountered very little accountability in their daily lives. They are not taught that they have to be accountable for their actions. There is always someone to blame – their parents, the rules, teachers, etc. Instead of being accountable, they find excuses.
These are just a few of the reasons that young people are having a hard time getting and keeping jobs. Do any of these apply to you?
