Many people are pursuing careers in healthcare because these careers are in high demand.  The baby boomer generation is getting older, and there is a growing need for qualified individuals in every area of the health care field. One of the jobs you might be considering is Medical Office Assistant.

How do you know if the Medical Office Assistant career is right for you? Here are some of the must-have qualities for future medical office assistants:


You Must be Outgoing

Medical office assistants work with people every day.  They work with clients and with medical professionals so they must be willing and able to work with people of all kinds.  Professionalism is a must.  Throughout the day you may be introducing yourself to new patients, talking to people on the phone, or meeting new doctors and nurses.  If you are shy and withdrawn, this may be a challenge for you.

You Must be Organized

Multitasking is part of the job as a medical office assistant.  Because there are so many things that medical assistants are responsible in your day-to-day environment, you need to be able to move from one task to another quickly and easily.  All of your tasks need to be completed and some of them have to be done at certain times of the day.  This requires a large degree of skill.


You Must be a Good Communicator

In your job, you must be able to relay information accurately, both to patients and to medical professionals.  When you are talking to a doctor, you need to speak in the same language as the doctor so knowing your medical terminology well is essential.  However, when you talk to patients, you need to be able to give them the information that they need in language that they can understand, so sometimes you will need to paraphrase the doctor’s words in simpler terms.


You Must be a Good Listener

A medical office assistant will receive instructions and information from a wide variety of people.  It is important that you be able to retain the information and record it as needed.  When you are given instructions, it is essential that you follow them exactly as they are given.
