The Qualities of a Successful Massage Therapist

A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) plays an important role in the well-being of their client. With the right blend of knowledge and skills a RMT can accurately diagnose a client and suggest treatments.

But much like any Heath Care profession, Massage Therapy goes beyond required skills. The right attitude and qualities are key players in helping you become a successful RMT. Here's a list of qualities and traits a Massage Therapist must have:

A Desire to Help Others: As a Massage Therapist, people confide in you to help them regain physical strength. It is a very rewarding and humbling experience to have a client leave your clinic completely satisfied and healthy. If you've always wanted to give back in any way you could, a career in Massage Therapy may be right for you!

Excellent Customer Service Skills:  From the moment your clients enter the clinic, it is important you make them feel comfortable and welcome. People come to massage therapists to feel better. They are vulnerable and need someone to listen to them and reciprocate in a professional yet empathetic way.

A High Degree of Emotional Intelligence: Regardless of personal preferences, you will need to provide the client with the kind of social interaction that they are looking for. Some clients  like to talk or like to listen to you talk while they are being massaged and others like complete silence. This is where emotional intelligence will help you pick up on social cues from your client, thereby, making it easier for you to create an interaction best suited to their personalities.

Networking Skills: You will have to market yourself because even if you work at a group practice you’ll need to bring in clients. Networking is an important part of your job.

Physical Strength: Being a massage therapist is physically demanding, especially at the beginning. You need to be in good shape and take care of your health. You need to be able to stand for long periods of time and you need to have good upper body strength.

If you have all or most of the above mentioned traits, consider a career in Massage therapy. We can assure you it's a choice you won't regret because of the many benefits that come with being a RMT.
