Ask This Question at the Interview: "Do You Have a Social Media Policy"

Do you know what a social media policy is?
A social media policy (also called a social networking policy)  is a corporate code of conduct that provides guidelines for employees who post content on the Internet either as part of their job or as a private person. - Search Compliance

Many businesses have them now or have them in development and this is a good thing for employers and employees.  It lets employees know exactly what is and is not acceptable.  It lets employees know what is expected of them.  And it protects employers from social media backlash.

This is a great question to ask at an interview because it shows the employers several things:

  • That  you are able to ask thoughtful questions
  • That you are aware of the impact that social media can have on a company
  • That you are willing to evaluate your social media use and the impact it can have on a company
  • That you are already considering things that you may have to be aware of if you get the job
So, next time you are at an interview and the interviewer asks you if you have any questions, don't shake your head no and look in your lap.  Ask if they have a social media policy.  You may even be able to review if you are offered the job and wan to take some time to consider.
