Make a Difference as a Medical Laboratory Professional

When we think of health care professionals, many of us will think of the doctors and nurses that we routinely come into contact with when we are at the clinic or hospitals.  But health care professionals such as those who work in medical laboratories play an important role too in our health and well-being.

Medical Laboratory professionals are one of the largest groups of health care professionals in Canada. They include:

Medical Laboratory Technologists - MLTs use a variety of laboratory instruments as part of the diagnostic procedure to analyze tissue samples, blood and other body fluids. Under the microscope, they are able to see any excess fluids, abnormal cell count, infections or disease.  Using the test results from MLTs, doctors are then able to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Specialized Technologists - Specialized Technologists use medical laboratory equipment for specialized fields of work including Cytotechnology to detect cancer or abnormal changes at the cell level, Clinical Genetics Technology to conduct tests on chromosomes, DNA and RNA, and other specialty areas like Immunology, Electron Microscopy, Virology, or Parasitology.

Medical Laboratory Assistants - MLAs perform the practical components of sample analysis. They often collect samples directly from the patients.  Under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs), MLAs sort, prepare and process samples to be tested by MLTs.

These medical laboratory professionals often work around the clock to provide accurate tests results so that doctors and other health care professionals can diagnose and treat patients appropriately.

If you have an interest in working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant, start by enrolling in a training program that is recognized by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).  Once you complete the program, you will need to challenge the CSMLS exam.  For more information about the certification process, visit CSMLS.  Our Medical Laboratory Assistant program in Winnipeg is starting June 1st, 2015.  Inquire now to find out about entrance requirements and funding options for this program.
